What is the difference between a Shiraz and a Syrah?

The same grape is known as Syrah in France and Shiraz in Australia. The name Shiraz for this grape variety is also commonly used in South Africa and Canada. In the United States, it is found under both names depending on the winery.

Vineyard Spotlight - Round Pond Estate

Photo

Looking for something new in Napa? Round Pond Estate, well known for their award-winning artisan olive oils and red wine vinegars, has just unveiled a small but impressive winery. For years, the MacDonnell family turned most of their grapes into gourmet vinegars while keeping their handcrafted wines to themselves. Now they’re branching out with a limited number of cases available to the public.

Visitors to the estate can tour the gorgeous grounds where the family practices sustainable farming and production techniques, then head back to the impressive new tasting room to sample their 2003 and 2004 Cabernet Sauvignons and 2004 Nebbiolo.

Open Thursday through Monday from 11 am to 4 pm by appointment. Choose from a traditional tasting for $25 or a tour and tasting with matching appetizers made with their signature products for $35. Want to go all-out? For $175, Round Pond also offers a seasonally based wine dinner under the stars on the fourth Saturday of each month. -- J.L.
