The Perfect Wines For Picnics

Photo

Wondering what to drink with a summer picnic? Light-bodied wines that are relatively low in alcohol are perfect for sunny afternoons in the park or even your own backyard. Be sure to take chilled bottles out of the cooler about 10 minutes before serving so that the flavor can come through. Whether you’re packing a feast or picking up a gourmet basket for two, here are a few no-fail favorites just in time for Memorial Day:

Light, effervescent vihno verde, with its slightly green hue and crisp, refreshing flavor, is an excellent choice when the weather gets warm. Broadbent Vinho Verde NV from Portugal goes especially well with lobster rolls and chicken salad sandwiches.

The Mediterranean is known for its rosés. On summer days the Spanish sip chilled rosado, a pretty pink vino filled with ripe summer fruit flavors. Try Cune Rosado 2006 from Spain. This is a versatile wine that will go with nearly every picnic lunch, from fried chicken to ham and cheese to tuna Niçoise.

All kinds of meats, from hot dogs to country paté, taste better with Pinot Noir. Try them with the silky, complex Craggy Range Winery Te Muna Road Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006 from New Zealand.

If you love red wine but prefer to drink something chilled with your picnic fare, try a ripe, juicy Beaujolais. Laboure Roi Beaujolais Villages St. Armand 2006 from France is wonderful after twenty minutes in the fridge and goes especially well with cold cuts and cheeses.  --J.L.
