What better way to spend Valentine’s Day weekend than in the Lodi, California wine country sipping delicious handcrafted wines during the 12th Annual Wine and Chocolate event. The Lodi Wine Country is tucked between the San Francisco Bay Area and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada with beautiful vineyards in a rural atmosphere. The climate can be described as true Mediterranean with its warm days and cool evenings. When you travel the Lodi Wine Trail you will be surprised by the variations in vineyards from new to decades old from large to boutique. Lodi is famous for their Zinfandel which are older vines that spread their roots deep into the sandy soil and the vines are noticeable because of the “head pruned” pattern. This compares to the newer vines of Merlot, Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon which are recognized by their long trellised rows. The Lodi Wine Region has adopted rules for sustainable winegrowing whereby each vineyard can become certified by a third party (Protected Harvest) that endorses the vineyards use of stringent environmental farming standards. On an annual basis growers can get their vineyards certified as producing sustainably-grown wine grapes. In 1986 Lodi got its own Appellation as an American Viticulture Area making Lodi no longer the wine industry’s best kept secret. Today there are hundreds of Lodi labeled wines where vintners are proud of their traditions and their modern advances in science and technology and are leaders in sustainable viticulture practices.
